Summer Traditions on Bald Head Island
One of the things Inn guests love most about Bald Head Island is its sense of tradition. Summer here is filled with events that bring islanders and visitors together year after year. From decorated golf carts and moonlit gatherings to scenic races through maritime forest wynds, these events help create the unforgettable memories that define a Bald Head Island summer.
If you’re visiting The Inn at Bald Head Island this season, here are a few beloved island traditions you won’t want to miss.
The Annual Golf Cart Parade
Every July Fourth, Bald Head Island’s streets transform into a rolling celebration of creativity during the Annual Golf Cart Parade hosted by the Old Baldy Foundation. Since cars are absent from island life, golf carts become the stars of the show — and residents and visitors go all out decorating them in patriotic themes, island motifs and hilarious costumes.
Spectators line the streets to watch the parade wind through the island, creating one of the most charming and whimsical Bald Head Island traditions of the year. The event supports the preservation efforts of Old Baldy Lighthouse, North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse and the island’s most treasured landmark.
Whether you participate or simply watch from the sidelines, the Golf Cart Parade is pure island joy.
Howl at the Moon
One of Bald Head Island’s favorite traditions is the monthly Howl at the Moon gathering hosted by the Maritime Market. This free community event welcomes both islanders and visitors for a relaxed evening celebrating sunset, moonrise and the simple pleasure of being together at the beach.
The next Howl at the Moon events will take place on June 29 and July 29 from 7–9 p.m. at Beach Access 39. Guests are encouraged to BYOB and bring a dish to share if they’d like. As the sun sets into the ocean, everyone gathers to watch the changing sky — and when the moon rises, the crowd howls together with abandon.
One of the evening’s most memorable moments is the sound of a bagpiper playing as the sun disappears below the horizon, creating a magical atmosphere that perfectly captures the spirit of summer on Bald Head Island.
Turtle Trot 5K Races
Hosted weekly on Wednesday mornings in June and July by the Bald Head Island Conservancy, the Turtle Trot 5K has become both a fitness tradition and a meaningful way to support sea turtle conservation efforts on the island.
The race takes participants along scenic island roads while raising awareness for the Conservancy’s important environmental work. Runners and walkers, young and old alike, all take part, creating an energetic atmosphere each week.
Sea turtle nesting season is one of the most special times of year on Bald Head Island, and the Turtle Trot allows visitors to connect directly with the island’s conservation mission while enjoying the natural beauty of the island. Sign up for a Turtle Trot.
