Celebrating Sea Turtles on Bald Head Island
Each year on June 16, World Sea Turtle Day shines a spotlight on one of the ocean’s most remarkable creatures — sea turtles — and there’s no better place to celebrate than Bald Head Island. Home to one of the most active sea turtle nesting beaches in North Carolina, the island plays an important role in protecting these incredible creatures for generations to come.
At the heart of protection efforts is the Bald Head Island Conservancy, an organization dedicated to coastal conservation, environmental education and scientific research. For more than four decades, the Conservancy’s staff and volunteers have worked tirelessly throughout sea turtle nesting season to monitor nests, protect hatchlings and educate visitors about the importance of preserving fragile coastal habitats.
Sea turtle season on Bald Head Island typically runs from May through October, with nesting activity peaking during the summer months. During this time, guests staying at The Inn at Bald Head Island have the unique opportunity to experience sea turtle conservation firsthand through special programs offered by the Conservancy.
One of the most popular experiences is the Turtle Walk, which Inn guests can enjoy after purchasing a Conservancy membership. These guided nighttime beach excursions give participants the chance to learn about sea turtle nesting behavior while walking the shoreline alongside Conservancy educators and interns. If conditions are right, guests may even witness a loggerhead sea turtle coming ashore to nest or a "boil" as hatchlings emerge from a nest — an unforgettable event that few people ever have the chance to experience.
Inn guests can also patrol the shore during Ride Alongs (Conservancy membership purchase is required), where participants accompany Conservancy staff on ATVs to check nesting activity along Bald Head Island’s beaches. These educational outings provide a behind-the-scenes look at the careful monitoring and protection efforts that take place each day during nesting season.
The Inn at Bald Head Island is proud to be a longtime sponsor and supporter of the Bald Head Island Conservancy. Protecting the island’s natural habitats and wildlife has always been central to our values as island residents and innkeepers, and we applaud the Conservancy’s ongoing work to preserve this special coastal environment.
