Fall Birdwatching on Bald Head Island: Migration Season Takes Flight
Fall brings a quieter rhythm to Bald Head Island—and one of the most rewarding seasons of the year for birdwatching.
As birds begin their annual journeys south, Bald Head Island becomes an important stopover for migratory species traveling along the Atlantic Coast. The island’s beaches, salt marshes, maritime forest and tidal creeks provide a variety of habitats where birds can rest and feed before they continue toward their winter destinations or overwinter on the island.
The birdwatching experience can be wonderfully unpredictable. During migration, birders may encounter colorful songbirds moving through the maritime forest, including warblers and vireos. The island's showy Painted Buntings are particularly notable, with Bald Head Island representing an important coastal breeding population. Most depart during fall migration, although individual birds occasionally remain through the winter.
At the same time, fall marks the arrival of birds escaping colder climates farther north to overwinter on the island. Yellow-rumped Warblers, Palm Warblers and White-throated Sparrows become familiar sights, while Ruby-crowned Kinglets may move through the island's wooded areas. Along the shoreline and surrounding waters, winter visitors can include Black Scoters, Red-breasted Mergansers, Common Loons and Northern Gannets. Raptors such as Northern Harriers, Sharp-shinned Hawks and Cooper’s Hawks also make the season especially exciting for birdwatchers. Recent Bald Head Island Conservancy Christmas Bird Counts have documented many of these species among the island's winter bird population.
For shorebird enthusiasts, Bald Head Island offers another remarkable opportunity. Black-bellied Plovers and Sanderlings can be seen along the beaches, while American Oystercatchers, Dunlin, Ruddy Turnstones and other shorebirds may appear along the island's creek and river habitats.
